Eric’s funeral on Monday 7th February is a family affair with a limited number of invited mourners. Due to great interest in Rotherham, especially the footballing fraternity, the cortege will pass down New York Way (the entrance/exit to the stadium, ample parking nearby) at around 2.30pm, thereby taking in Eric’s much-loved New York Stadium, home of Rotherham United F.C

Eric Twigg died on Thursday at his home near the Moorgate tennis club where he had been a member in more recent times. Most will remember his being an active member of the Dore and Totley club where, in 2005/6, he led the team that completely reshaped the courts and clubhouse, probably saving the club from extinction. His early tennis was played at Swinden House, Rotherham which, having tried unsuccessfully to get a third court, he left to play elsewhere. Table tennis was his other game which he played for Phoenix in the Rotherham league. Most of us who knew Eric will link him with Rotherham United FC, ‘The Millers’, where he was a Vice President. The New York stadium includes an Eric Twigg stand, in association with Pukka Pies for whom he was the Northern Distributor from the mid 60’s, still continuing as a family business as Eric Twigg Foods. He was always generous with both his advice to struggling tennis partners and with those pies! In later years he travelled a lot, had some good contacts in sports and entertainment, and tried to avoid going to any place twice, but he did in the end settle for Madeira as his favourite holiday haunt. He only returned from there earlier this week.
